Do I need to import the hands or is it automatic? Does the software need to be open while playing?

Inappropriate?No, you don't need the software open while you are playing. You only need to save the hand histories on the poker software. For example in Poker Stars, you must go to the 'Options -> Instant Hand History Options' menu.
In Poker Copilot preferences you choose the folder where the hand histories are, and from there, the import is automatic.
